A Practical Step-by-Step Guide for Gas Engineers
Smart service stickers are changing the way boiler servicing is recorded, tracked, and communicated. These QR code-enabled labels give you and your customers instant access to service history, due dates, and rebooking options, all with a quick scan.
This guide walks through how to use smart stickers during a boiler servicing job.
Whether you're an independent engineer or running a team, this system is easy to adopt and offers real value long-term.
Step 1: Clean and Prepare the Boiler Surface
Before applying a sticker, choose a suitable location on the boiler where the label will be visible and protected.
Common spots include:
- •The front panel near the boiler display
- •The side casing
Make sure the area is clean and dry. Wipe away any dust, condensation, or grease to ensure the sticker bonds well and stays in place over time.

Step 2: Apply the Smart Service Sticker
Peel off the sticker and apply it firmly to the prepared surface. Press down across the entire label to remove air bubbles and ensure it adheres securely.
The QR code should face forward and be easy to scan without obstruction.

Step 3: Scan the QR Code to Register the Boiler
Once applied, scan the QR code with your phone. This will open a service record page, typically powered by WORKBELT's smart sticker platform.
Enter the details of the boiler such as:
- •Appliance type and model
- •Serial number
- •Date of service
- •Notes on the work carried out (e.g. flue check, pressure test, parts replaced)
- •Gas Safe Certificate (generated through the WORKBELT platform)

Step 4: Educate the Customer
After completing the job, show the customer how to scan the sticker themselves using their phone's camera.
Explain what they'll see:
- •A summary of the boiler's service history
- •The date of the next due service
- •Your contact information
- •A button or link to rebook you for future services
This helps build trust and makes your service look professional and organised.

Step 5: Update the Sticker on Future Visits
At the next annual service (or sooner if needed), scan the same sticker to update the digital record. You can log new information, note any changes to the system, and upload new photos or documents if relevant.
Because the record is tied to the sticker's QR code, there's no need to remove or replace the label. The history stays intact and accessible.

Step 6: Standardise the Process
For repeatable success across multiple jobs or properties:
- •Use the same sticker location on every boiler
- •Add the sticker step to your regular service checklist
- •Mention the feature in your quotes or service descriptions to add value
Over time, customers will come to expect it --- and it helps position your business as modern and forward-thinking.
Summary of Benefits
By using smart service stickers, you gain:
- •A simple asset tracking system for every boiler
- •Faster, digital record-keeping
- •Increased repeat business through easy rebooking
- •Instant transparency for customers and landlords
- •A professional edge in a competitive market
This small addition to your workflow can result in big returns --- not just in time saved, but in customer loyalty and improved service quality.
